Obituary for Professor Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Kurt Fleischhauer
The Institute for Science and Ethics regrets the loss of Professor Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Kurt Fleischhauer, who passed away on June 13, 2023 at the age of 93.
As professor emeritus of neuroanatomy and former rector of the University of Bonn, Professor Fleischhauer contributed significantly to the foundation of the IWE in 1993. He was led by the conviction that the profound changes in the sciences and the resulting effects on society require ethical reflection and guidance. With this far-sighted attitude, he set the course for the University of Bonn to become an important site of applied ethics.
Through his strategic advice, Professor Fleischhauer contributed significantly to the success of the IWE, especially in its early days. In addition, he himself carried out a number of important research projects at the IWE, including on questions of the fair distribution of resources in the health care system. Professor Fleischhauer will be unforgotten by all young scientists who were lucky enough to get to know him at the IWE. He always had an open ear for questions and constructive comments on research papers. In this way, Professor Fleischhauer has graciously accompanied and encouraged the path to science for many at the IWE.
